A place in the nest?

A sanctuary
by Lintukoto

Late November in Helsinki.

Slush on the ground, dark by four.

Kaamos is coming, and every calendar is full.

Everybody wants something from you.

All over the world, clubs are filling up with beds: people lying down in clean sound, something warm to drink, nobody dancing. Every club used to have a chill-out room. We miss them, so we’re bringing them back, starting with one night at the end of Slush week. We call it the nest.

Go nowhere.
Be nowhere.

No dancing, no doing, no small talk. Come in from the cold, take your shoes off, land, and lie down in the dark with a hundred and forty-nine others. All it asks is that you listen.

This is the first Ambient Bird’s Nest, and the first of many: other artists, other acts, themes and genres you wouldn’t expect. The first is made by the ODD family and friends, shaped by what our community loves. Lintukoto, one of our team’s projects, presents it with ODD and a flock of partners.

When the cold came, the old Finns said, the birds flew to Lintukoto: a warm place at the edge of the world, where the sky bends down to touch the earth.

They found the way along Linnunrata, the birds’ path. Finns still call the Milky Way by that name.

This is a small Lintukoto in Vallila. Let the nest take care of you: mother bird is up all night, so you’re safe and sound.

The ODDspace Gallery from above, in points of light: the nest in the middle, beds round it in a ring, the tea house, the landing and the rooms at the back.
  1. The room · ODDspace Gallery, Teollisuuskatu 9D

    Lie down,
    or sit down.

  2. In from the Aula

The landing. Shoes off, and the week with them.

  3. Then tea

Tea at low tables, not a bar.

  4. Through the opening

The nest in the middle: a glowing egg in a ring of branches. Beds round it, feet to the nest, paper lanterns overhead.

  5. At the back

Dark sensory rooms with installations in them: a light in a thicket of branches, a tangle hung under a lamp, the branches thrown big onto the walls. A shower, and a small infrared sauna for three.

  6. The artist

At the side of the ring, low and in the dark. Nobody faces a stage: the music finds you from all four corners.

  7. Find your place

Sofas on the shore and a quiet corner, if you’d rather sit than lie down.

  8. Sound, in partnership with

    360 audio
    by Genelec.

Bathe in clean sound: a speaker in each corner, every bed inside the square, played low. The newest sound there is, so a hundred and fifty people can do the oldest thing there is: lie in the dark together and listen.

It isn’t about the line-up, who plays, or even what they play. It’s about why they’re there and what they make together. The night is thought through from the door to the last note, so you don’t have to think about any of it.

  1. 18:00 · Doors

    Land.

In from the slush, still talking, carrying the week. Shoes off, tea in hand. Blue light, and the nest just lit.

  2. 18:30 · First set

    Fold.

Nobody arrives calm, so it starts where you are: with a pulse. Then slower, then down. Deep red from the floor.

  3. 20:00 · Second set

    Nest.

Down long enough to feel safe. The quietest the room has been. Teal and violet.

  4. 21:30 · Live trumpet

    Sing.

A body that feels safe can play again. One silver beam, a trumpet played in the dark, and the scent comes in.

  5. Later · The deepest set

    Dream.

Calm and open, you can go deepest: inward, eyes closed. As deep as the night goes. Indigo.

  6. Until 02:00 · The farewell

    Fly home.

Let go, gently. The nest a last dim red. You carry the warmth out into the cold.

A hundred and fifty places.
Early birds, ten euros.
